Installing Eudora

Return to Email Support Page

Eudora Setup Instructions:

The folks at Eudora.com have an extremely flexible and powerful email client program that from experience is the best email program that runs under the Windows environment.

I have an old version of this extremely robust and virus-safe program that is available for download for my business customers.

The URL is http://www.iacl.com/eudor154.exe (approx 1.5 MB in size)

Download instructions:

1. type in (or copy paste) the above URL (address) into the Internet Explorer's or Netscape navigator's URL or address line.

2. hit enter and select save to disk on the popup panel.

3. Specify a hard disk location for the file that you can easily find later. We suggest something directly off the main volume such as c:\eudorasetup.

4. Once file is downloaded bring up Windows Explorer and double click on the file in your eudorasetup directory.

5. A black box will appear and extract some files.

6. Refresh (if not automatic) your Windows Explorer contents to see the extracted files and double click the one called setup (icon with a small blue screen)

7. Setup program will commence (note you can change the directory that Eudora installs to under the 2nd screen called "choose desatination location") This is so you can install multiple instances of the program.

############## Explanation of Eudora Lite ################

This version of Eudora is a single email address version. Newer versions available at Eudora website are multiple personality versions.

This single version if installed into seperate directories can be used for more than one email account Through simple creation of desktop shortcuts it is possible to have multiple personalities however, only one can be open at a time.

8. Complete rest of setup - one or two more straightforward panels.

RUNNING EUDORA:

1. In Windows Explorer, find the directory you have installed Eudora to and find the file named eudora (the one with the mailbox icon) highlight this file and right click select "create shortcut".

2. A shortcut will appear in Windows explorer. Left click to highligh the shortcut and drag it (with the left click held down) onto the desktop area and release.

3. Left click onthe new desktop icon and right click select "rename" and type in something "my email" or whatever. Thus the convenient desktop icon is easily clicked on to start the program.

4. Double click the desktop icon to start the program. Cancel the first panel that appears (an early attempt at a not so working wizard) and go to Tools/Options.

5. Under Getting started: put in userid@POP3machine where it asks for POP account (yes this is somewhat strange)
      put in your real name
Under Personal Information put in your return address (your email address)
Under Hosts put in your SMTP machine name

The rest is OK as is and should be pretty much left alone but can be costomized later.

6. Click OK and in the main Eudora window under File/Check mail to access your account (must be online) and will ask for password.

FEATURES:

1. Main Menu: Mailbox/In and Mailbox/Out and then Window/Tile Vertically to neatly arrange in and out boxes on the screen.

2. Message/Attach File to attach any file for transmission as email attachment. (close out of Word or Excel first)

3. Incoming attachemnts stored under "attach" folder in main Eudora directory. Usually incoming attachments can be directly clicked on but if not working open the application first and then find the file under "attach" (sort by date helps)

4.Transfer/New to create additional email boxes for correspondents who send a lot of mail. Any email message in your in or out box can be highlighted, select transfer and click appropriate mailbox to move messages.

5.Tools/Signature to create a signature - can be automatically appended to the end of any message see Tools/Options/ Sending Mail to disable use of Signature. We like to create multiple signatures then go to Tools/Signatures and select the one we want to use on a case by case basis.

6. File/Save As to save long outgoing message in progress between lunch or reboots etc.

7. Buttons: Trash - dumps highlighted message into trash. Message is out of site but not deleted.

8. Buttons: New Message - The piece of paper - click the piece of paper to bring up a fresh screen.

9. Arrows: Reply, Forward and Redirect. Mostly you'll use reply which sends an incoming message back to sender with your response and original text copied below your message for reference. Forward and Redirect act in similar manner yet alters how message headers appear.

10. Address Book. Click New, and add a name, email and notes, phone numebr etc. The name, let's say it's john can be typed into the TO: line of eany email and the program will know the email address to send to or highlight any entry and click the "To", "CC" or "BCC" to automatically drop that email adress into the appropriate field of an email message in progress. You can put in more than one email address into the address(es) line so you can easily define a group such as "my friends" and send message to all at once without having to individually copy each. "Put it on the recipients list" works in similar fashion.
