A few common caveats regarding Outlook & Outlook Express;
  • By default Outlook 2003 runs in Windows security enhanced "Restricted Sites" Zone.

  • Older versions of Outlook (98/2000/2002) run in the less secure "Internet Zone" and are open to viruses. Increase the default security zone within Outlook from "Internet" to "Restricted Sites". This setting protects HTML messages from viruses spread by means of scripting.

  • If Outlook is not sending or recieving, it can and does jam up on a queued outbound message that (for whatever reason) did not originally post so it becomes necessary to clear out all pending outgoing messages and try again.

  • When Outlook appears to become or act sickly restart your computer. This helps Outlook recover from it's confused state.

  • Empty or lessen trash, spam, in, out and any Outlook folder that becomes burgoningly large. The bigger these are, the more prone to failure Outlook becomes.

  • Outlook is the world's most targeted email client when it comes to email Viruses and Worms. Be sure you have an updated anti-virus profile running and have secured Internet Options in Control panel to some degree of customization. Anti Spyware and specific Virus removal tools can be found at IAC Virus Portal page.

  • Microsoft in a recent security update article ask that you run Outlook in "Text" only mode. (in Outlook Tools/Options/Send) Sending messages as "Text Only" vastly adds to reliability of your outgoing message being properly delivered and not caught somewhere in spam filtering. See "Step 3" above.

  • Outlook and Internet Explorer are regularly patched by Microsoft. Visit their website, download and apply any appropriate patches for your particular version of Internet Explorer and Outlook. The frequency of Microsoft announcing patches for it's Internet Explorer is about every 2 to 3 months (8 to 10 weeks) as new vulnerabilities are discovered. We post updates to Internet Explorer patches at http://supportcenter.iacl.com/resources.htm.

  • If all alse fails attempt to print out any important emails, output your address book to some standard format and then reinstall Outlook. Outlook commonly ships with Microsoft Office and Outlook Express generally appears as part of all Microsoft Windows Operating systems.

  • For futher Information the Microsoft Knowledge base has answers to many questions regarding Outlook and can be access from http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx.

DISCLAIMER - We make no representation as to the accuracy or completedness of any information presented here and that the content of any website link to Microsoft or any other site is soley the responsibility of that organization. Moreover, there have been many versions of Outlook and Outlook Express and where we are generally impressed with it's capabilities we do not use Outlook in-house as it's email-related operational readiness remains to be address by Microsoft. Email is a text medium. Every effort to incorporate HTML and script coding (for the main benefit of advertisers) into email clients has opened the door to security issues. Microsoft are beginning to see and realize the harm this is causing and we look forward to an "out of the box" robust text-only email reader from Microsoft.
